Although the news of Skatemaster Tate's (Gerry Hurtado) passing on Oct 13th after a fight with cancer swept through social media like wildfire, and I can only assume you all know by now, I felt it would be a disservice to Skatemaster Tate if we did not mention his passing and give all respect here. For "younger" skaters like me that were coming up in the late 80's when being a skateboarder was like being an outcast of society and getting looked down upon at every turn, it was refreshing to have someone like Skatemaster Tate cheering us ALL on. He was a skater (killed it on a longboard wayyyyy before anyone else!) at heart like us all, but he was also skating's original "hype man" in my opinion. His show "Skate TV" that came on Nickelodeon always stoked me. As cheesy as it was at times, we, skateboarders, had a tiny glimmer of acceptance for once on a larger scale, and I thank him for that. Skatemaster Tate, thank you!!!
