Day 2: Friday December 8th - East Phoenix Tour |
After working in the Tempe area on a project for the past year or so, I have learned my way around a bit. I have also developed a particular favorite restaurant for good Mexican food, Los Taquitos off of Elliot Road (4747 E ELLIOT RD STE #17 by the SafeWay), and decided to take the guys there for a good, quick lunch. This place serves great authentic Mexican food which is quite different from the Mexican places back home in Alabama.(haha) Everyone loved it. Great food for a cheap price...and the girls that work there are quite nice too! Who could hate that?!?! We all filled up and were ready to go again. We made a stop by Utility Boardshop for the guys to check out a local shop. It was a great excuse to let our food settle a bit. We talked to the owner some (he is a member here!) and just browsed around. A couple of the guys bought some shop shirts as souvenirs of the trip. Then we were on our way to the third park of the day, Pecos. | |||||||||||||||||||||
Pecos (Ahwatukee) Skate Park |
I scheduled Pecos on the tour to be after lunch because it is a more relaxed, small transition park. It was quite different from anything we had or would be skating and made for a nice session. With school still in, the park was surprisingly busy. Lots of people were skating as we pulled up. Once again, a quick restroom pit stop and off to the park. Everyone kind of went their own way and checked out the area. Pecos is like a sprawling street course with little flow areas and transitions all along the edges. Towards the back right portion, the flow area connects into this odd little compact bowl. When I say "compact", I mean this thing is ridiculously small and cramped. It seems like it was almost an afterthought to stick the bowl in there. It’s different and fun, but just kind of out of place there. Nonetheless, Patrick and Kerry had fun doing quick doubles runs into the bowl and back out. There was also a group of about four other guys there skating that were just ripping the place up. They had to be locals as they seemed to know the place very well. They were doing huge ollies over the hips and big tricks on the larger quarter-pipe. They were fun to watch for a while during breaks. Also, there were a few older guys that showed up. I thought they might be there for the AoS-fest. Most all of them were sporting large Skaterbuilt decks. One guy had a custom chrome "cow catcher" on the nose of his Skaterbuilt that was very cool. We talked to one of the guys as we were leaving. He is part of the Old Man Army and was telling us to check it out online when we got a chance. He was stoked to hear about our tour. After fully exploring that park, it was time in the schedule to move on once more. We were on our way to the fourth and last park of the day, Tempe. |
