As the weather continued to look unsure at best, Pat Wachter and the gang got some introductions and special awards out of the way
that are usually done at the end. Just in case the big storms did move in, they wanted to make sure these people were specifically recognized.
First up, Pat introduced his "secret" guest judge. It was skate legend and ramp/pipe pioneer Waldo Autry! Waldo's day was before my time when I first picked up a board, but I was well aware of who he was. That photo of him high on the wall at Mt. Baldy is a classic! Watching Pat give the intro was great. It was like seeing a little kid with his hero. Waldo was humble and just a helluva nice guy. I think he had as much fun checking out the skating and mingling with everyone throughout the day. Next up, Tim Spinosi awarded Jason Green of Cullman,AL with this year's "Spinosi Award". The Spinosi Award is in honor of Tim's brother Andy who was one of Alabama's top skaters in his day during the late 70's/early 80's and who passed away several years ago. Each year it is presented to someone in Alabama who has contributed the most back to skateboarding in the state in the previous year. (MORE INFO) Lastly, Pat Wachter introduced guest judge Kris Markovich. Kris is an Alabama son and now resides in Atlanta. Personally, I had not seen nor skated with Kris since way back in the day as he was first going pro. It was great to see him again and listen to his stories. Hopefully now that he is in Atlanta, we will be seeing more of him. Kris got a surprise as he was presented one of Tim Spinosi's handpainted custom decks as thanks for coming over. After the awards and intros, I spent a little while in the parking lot for a "safety meeting"(haha) and just walking around checking out the scene before things got back under way. |
